Earthman Pulp by BrattyBen Earthman Pulp by BrattyBen
I'm lucky. This BARELY made fit on my scanner.

This was a little ditty I worked on about a month ago. It's gouache paint, which I swear by. I was trying to go for that retro sci-fi type of feel. The rich colors, the textures. Basically, I went really illustrative with this, which I don't normally do. I'm more of a graphic thinker.

But MAN!, was this ever fun.

Let me know what you think.

I tried to match the colors as they were on the original. Plus, there's a bit of funky in the foreground, so try to ignore that.

Well, I guess you can't since I just mentioned it.

Enjoy.

Gouache? OH LAWDY. :o
It looks so solid and beefy. Whenever I use gouache it ends up watery and wussy.

Delicious! You really seem to have gouache down to a science. Diggin' the shading on E-man.

Thanks. Yeah, I started working with gouache when I learned way back in like 98 that Alex Ross used them. I thought that was cool and started tinkering with it. Haven't stopped yet. I plan on getting some more and doing some more stuff with them.

this is really nice man, very lush colours, great pose and character. i feel we dont get alot of depth in the picture. We see the spaceship behind him, but is doesnt feel that far behind him, so it makes the ship feel abit small. I think it could be that the ship and character are basically on the same horizon level. But the only thing that stood out to me.

I see what you mean, and I was really conscious of that when putting the stuff down. I had a pretty limited space, so I tried to make the best of it.
I was actually trying to create depth by layering the ground in different colors. Obviously, it wasn't effective enough. lol.

Oh I think this is so incredible! Composition is rockin' and the textures are really cool. Most of all I love all the color! I think the red sky really makes all the other colors pop. :D

Thank you so much!! I thought the red sky would make things a bit more vibrant, especially when contrasted with the cooler colors of Earthman and his ship.

Thanks again!

Excellent. I like the variety of textures on the alien landscape. I'm really enjoying the character too. He looks like he should have been played by Freddy Mercury in a movie.

My inspiration for the character came from a mixture of Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck. Freddy Mercury fits better though. Nice.
