Some comic fans can be annoying....

Thu Nov 13, 2008, 7:32 PM
I went over to Ain't It Cool news to check up on the latest haps, when I came across the new Watchmen trailer. It was awesome. I'm intrigued. Then, I did what I should NEVER do, YOU either. I read the talkbacks. MAN, sometimes comic fans come off as crybabies! "Where's the squid?".."Fuck Snyder, no squid?"
I understand that fans want all of the stuff they love about a comic put into a movie, but, sometimes the logistics of such things just don't work out. This kinda pisses me off. I mean, HELLO?!!! Just be glad there's a Watchmen MOVIE to begin with, right? Nitpicking just makes you look like a chump. I mean, there are some things to get mad about if they drastically change the character. STEEL, anybody?

So then, I did what you should NEVER, EVER do! I posted my own reply. Here's what I wrote:

"I'm as diehard a Watchmen fan, hell a comic fan, as anybody. I'm invested, okay? Having said that, I think it's okay for a FILM ADAPTATION to be tweaked here and there for the sake of making a coherent story. The squid, for all intents and purposes, was a bit of a subplot, that worked its way into the main thread. Snyder, even in an almost three hour movie, couldn't possibly be able to put all that in, hence the nixing of Black Freighter.

So, his alternative will probably be something the same in tone, but, something that's trimmed to fit the time frame and not alienate and confuse the non-fans. I trust Snyder to do the right thing, and if the main theme is intact, which to me is "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts ablsolutely".

What happens when the people who have incredible power to protect us, go off wing? Where's the balance? What happens when people who have all this power are as batshit crazy as the rest of us? I think that, and the dystopia, and impending doom feeling are what the Watchmen are all about. You don't need a squid to tell that."

So there.

Well, to be fair, the Black Freighter is supposedly going to be an animated short that'll be packed in with the DVD release. So they don't need to put in a new subplot at all.

I agree that this will be a great movie! and it just looks better all of the time. People just need to relax and wait for the movie before they go crazy about it. Things have to change sometimes to fit into the larger narrative. I think Synder knows what he is doing.

Me too.

Exactly. I hear they are going to piece it into the DVD as another viewing option.

dude i wonder if the same complainers said anything about the organic webshooters of a certain wall crawler, or the S less cape and high tower heeled boots of a certain super man...

i totaly agree with you. there is a time limit on movies, hell, even lord of the rings extended movie triology coulndt capture all the scenes / tales / characters told in the books, so chill out dudes..dont complain about something just to be heard or let know that you are not in objecting side of the matter. have a backbone and reasonable reason behind it :D

sometimes you gotta tweak, make adjustments for smth to fit. the matter is it the same thing after the tweak or something else entirely ???

so cheers dude :D
let them be what they make themselves look like :D wannabees :D
:iconbrattyben:
Yeah, you're right. I'm gonna enjoy the movie regardless!

I tend to bitch about stuff before it comes out (Dragon Ball), but I think Watchmen will be good. It probably won't be as good as the Dark Knight, but it should do well.

Some comic fans need to realize that these movies aren't going to be 100% accurate. In fact, all comic book movies are like that. If Watchmen does bomb at the box office, it doesn't take away from the book. Always cherish the book. The movie is like a bonus...a fan's interpretation....an expensive interpretation. I'm going in this as if this is all a big fan film. If it sucks, I won't get too upset. If a few pieces are missing, like you said, the man only has 3 hours max. Logically, things are going to be cut and edited to make a solid film.

Either way, this is good exposure to Alan Moore's book(s).

Personally I'm more worried that the movie is going to attract an unsavoury brand of fanatic like The Dark Knight did.

Those people kill me. Almost anything that has reader response is filled with those types of negative comments.
